How do you unwind after a demanding day?
As a therapist and dating coach, my days can be full—emotionally, mentally, and sometimes physically. Unwinding looks a little different depending on how the day was demanding, and I’m incredibly lucky to have a supportive partner who gets that and holds space for whatever kind of recharge I need.
If it was a busy-but-energizing kind of day (the ones where every session was meaningful and the to-do list actually got done), I usually still have a bit of social energy left. That’s when we’ll lean into something light and fun—a friendly (but serious!) cribbage tournament, a walk around the neighborhood if the weather’s on our side, or cozying up to binge a show together.
But if the day was more emotionally draining or stressful—the kind where I’ve held a lot of heaviness for others—I tend to need a softer landing. That’s when you’ll find me curled up with the Nintendo Switch, playing Animal Crossing to reset my nervous system. After that, we might play a low-key game or just talk, letting the day unravel gently with connection.
Unwinding for me isn’t about escape—it’s about choosing the right kind of comfort for the kind of day I’ve had.
